Family history

Over the years, thousands of people have been baptized, married or had their funeral service in St Alfege Church.  We very much welcome visits and enquiries from people who are following up a treasured family connection with the church. The church’s opening times can be found here on our Visit Us page.

There is a small number of memorials to people associated with the church in the church itself and there are many gravestones in the churchyard and burial ground. It should be noted that it is not easy to locate particular gravestones and the inscriptions on many have weathered away. There are over 1,000 bodies buried in 64 vaults in the Crypt. Each vault has the name of the first person to be buried in it.

Where you can find records

We do not keep records of births, marriages or deaths in the church. However, they can be found at: The Royal Borough of Greenwich Heritage Trust and the Metropolitan Archives.

The family history log book

The Heritage volunteers maintain a family history log book on the Visitors’ Welcome Desk. If you are visiting the church and would like to record any family connections (such as relatives or ancestors baptized, married or buried here) or historical connections (such as memories of St Alfege Church in wartime), please do jot down any information (including your contact details) in the log book. We are using the log book in the long term to build up information about families and individuals associated with the church. We may also be able to help you find out further information. If you would like to make an entry in the log book please do visit the church or send an email to Elizabeth Pearcey: e.pearcey@gmail.com
