Lunchtime Recital Series |

Thursdays and Saturdays | 13:05 | Free Entry

St Alfege Church presents free lunchtime recitals every Thursday and Saturday at 13:05.

We have a close and longstanding relationship with Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and many of these concerts are performed by students from the institution, particularly on Thursdays.

Our Saturday programmes tend to draw from a wider net, showcasing a variety of local, national, and international talent that encompasses many genres and disciplines.

The musical and artistic journey of this historic building spans many centuries; as The Heart of Greenwich, the St Alfege Church team is committed to being vibrant stewards of this ongoing story for artists and audiences alike. We welcome new ideas, feedback, and thoughts on how we might better serve the artistic needs of this community.

If you are interested in performing in this series, if you wish to propose a concert/event outside of this series, or if you are interested in engaging creatively with the church in any other way, we would be very happy to discuss your proposed performance/idea and the suitability of St Alfege Church as a venue with you.

Please contact Rhian Davies, our Concerts and Recitals Coordinator, for further information.

Trinity Laban CoLab Projects | Week 1

Project No. 121 | Frauenliebe und leben: Who was she, and where did she go?

Robert Schumann's iconic song cycle charts the passage of time through the stages of one woman's life. From meeting her love, marrying, having a child, and finally losing her love, we share a whole life experience with her. Yet, she remains unpredictable and elusive, her story unfinished.

Who was she? What happened to her after the final song? Why didn't Schumann set the final Chamisso poem which answers this question? With whom did she confide as she passed through her life from song to song, one major life event after another?

As we explore her character, we will find responses through other songs we know and love, from art song to opera aria, cabaret, and pop, and perhaps improvisation. As we interweave these responses around the original songs, a portrait might well emerge, or perhaps she will remain a mystery...

Project No. 17 | Melodies Through Time: A Band's Journey in Gaming Music

Embark on a musical journey through time, exploring the evolution of game music across decades. Dive into the most iconic songs of each era, tracing the melodies that defined their time. Uncover the nostalgic tunes that shaped gaming history, from retro classics to modern masterpieces collaborating in a band setting.

Whether you're into retro game music, modern hits, or anything in between, your unique style and talents will enrich our musical journey together. Let's create something special that reflects the diversity and creativity of all our band members.

Project No. 109 | The New Simplicity Project

A new suite of music and dance informed by the New Simplicity movement of the late 1970s and Stockhausen’s Zodiac composition Tierkreis. We will journey to another time, exploring improvisation, unconventional use of triadic harmony, simple melodies, and everyday movements.

Project No. 108 | Lauf der Zeit: Passage of Time, Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes

Brahms held a deep passion for amateur and community music making. The Liebeslieder Waltzes are one of the most enduring examples of this. During his lifetime, these songs would often be choral pieces. In the present day, they are performed in concert halls for SATB soloists and piano duet. All very serious. We forget they are WALTZES: to celebrate love across the full passage of time in our lives.
